Your Inner Critic Isn’t You

Separating Fear from Intuition

From My Desk to Yours

I've been sitting with a realization that completely shifted how I approach decision-making, and it's changed everything about how I show up in my business and relationships.

For years, I confused my inner critic with my intuition. I thought that nagging voice of doubt was my gut telling me something important.

Turns out, I had it completely backwards.

The voice that says "you're not ready" isn't your intuition protecting you — it's your fear trying to keep you small.

The Voice That Keeps You Stuck

Here's what I discovered: most of us have been programmed to listen to the wrong voice.

We think anxiety is intuition. We mistake fear for wisdom. We confuse our conditioning for our truth.

I used to think my inner critic was looking out for me. It would say things like:

  • "You don't have enough experience yet"

  • "What if you fail publicly?"

  • "You're not as smart as (whoever)”

And I listened. For years.

But here's the thing — your inner critic isn't you. It's a collection of other people's voices, past failures, and societal programming that's been running on autopilot in your head.

Your real voice? It's quieter. It doesn't shout warnings or catastrophize outcomes.

It simply knows.

The Difference Between Fear and Intuition

After studying the work of psychologists like Dr. Kristin Neff and Tara Brach, plus countless hours of self-reflection, I've found a simple way to distinguish between the two:

Fear speaks in absolutes and catastrophes:

  • "This will definitely fail"

  • "Everyone will judge you"

  • "You always mess things up"
